Gravettian Salmon
Gesso and acrylic on canvas board. 51cm X 76cm Framed
This is a painting study of a c23,000 years BP bas relief carving in the Abri du Poisson, Dordogne. I have long been interested in pre-historic paintings and carvings. I have seen this memorable rock carving in situ. One of the aspects I love about cave art is the porous nature of the figure and ground.
In art there is the idea of an object being defined by a line, an edge, but if this line/edge is interrupted then there is ambiguity between the object and the surface it is drawn on. This particularly powerful with cave art, where there is a tangible dialogue between the image and the rock from which it appears to emerge.
All my paintings are available as a limited edition Giclee print, LP Contact or at www.madeinross.co.uk
