January Sunrise, British Camp Reservoir, The Malvern Hills

Oil and cold wax medium on birch panel, framed. 62cm x 86cm

I plan my sunrise experience carefully. I note the time of sunrise and the weather forecast, I don’t set my alarm for cloudy, wet dawns. I generally have also rehearsed my location for an inspiring composition and how long it will take me to get to the location. I like to arrive at least half an hour before sunrise to watch the changing light. Winter sunrises are later but cold, summer sunrises are cool but early. As well as my simple sketching kit ( A5 sketchbook roll of coloured pencils, and iPhone) I also bring a flask of coffee.

This January morning was particularly beautiful with fog in the Severn Valley below, which glowed gold for a few minutes as the sun rose.
